12.06.16 – Hongdae and Dongdaemun districts, Seoul, South Korea
Seoul is such an incredible city. There are about 10 key districts around the city that are known for what they are about or offer. It was impossible to split our favourite two districts; Hongdae and Dongdaemun.
Hongdae is the university district and offers great food and drinks. The main street also has great shopping and markets for the younger generations! On our first visit here, we found two incredible food vendors. First we found Sobok Ice-Cream, so delicious. They only make one flavour, brown rice and always have a second flavour that’s new each month. For June it was Green Tea flavour. After ice-cream, it was time for lunch, and we thought we had found a good place for a snack. As it turns out the plate of fried chicken was enormous, enough to feed a small city. It was some of the best fried chicken we’ve ever had, but we didn’t manager to conquer the mountain!
Dongdaemun has a more suburban feel to it and has huge wholesale and food markets on the main road (Jongno-ro). The Gwangjang Market, known for its sheer size, is the most famous in Korea and we love visiting the food markets here for some Kimchi Dumplings. However, it was the Pyoung Hwa Wholesale Clothing Market that was outstanding. You can find everything from hats to underwear to hiking gear here and its super cheap and definitely worth a visit!
